Shakira panicked when she thought she accidentally revealed Rihanna’s pregnancy at the Met Gala 2025 in New York on Monday.
The “Waka Waka” singer, 48, told NBC News on the red carpet that she was most excited to see the Fenty Beauty founder, 37, at the event.
“Rihanna, I want to see her! Yeah, I want to see her so bad,” Shakira said, adding, “And I just heard the news too.”
When the reporter appeared to be confused about Shakira’s comment, the Colombian superstar replied, “She’s pregnant.”
But Shakira quickly realized that the reporter didn’t know about Rihanna’s pregnancy yet. She had a horrified look on her face assuming she just leaked Rihanna’s big news.
“Was I not supposed to say that?” Shakira asked after covering her face.
The singer and the reporter then laughed and Shakira walked away from the interview.
Despite Shakira’s fears, Rihanna’s pregnancy was already confirmed by a Page Six source after the “Diamonds” singer was photographed with her baby bump while heading to the Met Gala.
A$AP Rocky himself confirmed on the red carpet that Rihanna is expecting the couple’s third child together.
“Rihanna’s outfit tonight is … I don’t know, whatever, just don’t cover her baby hump, you dig?” he said in an interview on the carpet.
The rapper, 36, told the Associated Press that “it was time” for the couple to reveal Rihanna’s pregnancy publicly.
“I’m glad everybody’s happy for us, because we’re definitely happy,” he said.
Rihanna eventually showed up to the event in a Marc Jacobs gray bustier with a black floor-length skirt and cropped black jacket. She cradled her pregnant belly while posing for pictures on the carpet.
Shakira, who collaborated with Rihanna on their 2014 song “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” spoke about her pal’s pregnancy in a separate interview with Extra TV at the Met Gala.
“I just heard! I can’t believe it. Wow, she’s fast! I want to see her. It’s one of the people that I’m looking forward the most to see tonight,” she said.
Rihanna has two sons, RZA, 2, and Riot, 20 months, with Rocky, 36. The couple have been together since 2020.
The “Work” singer announced her first pregnancy in January 2022 with a photo shoot with Rocky. The following year, she confirmed her second pregnancy while performing at the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show.
She spoke about her latest pregnancy on the Met Gala red carpet.
“I’m good, shockingly feeling OK and not too overwhelmed at the moment,” she told ET on Monday. “At first, I was kind of like — tired but I’m excited.”
