Smoky NJ PATH train fire suspends service, snarling commute

Service was suspended on several New Jersey PATH lines Monday morning after fire broke out underneath an eastbound train in Newport Station, transport officials said.

The fire started at 6:19 a.m., filling the train with smoke, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a short statement. Passengers were evacuated from the platform, and several people were treated for smoke inhalation.

Service was suspended between Hoboken and the World Trade Center and 33rd Street, as well as between Journal Square and 33rd Street, while the lines between World Trade Center and Newark, and Hoboken and 33rd Street were operational, PANYNJ said.

Service was still out about two hours later between Journal Square and 33rd Street, as well as Hoboken and the World Trade Center, according to an 8:37 a.m. system alert. Service was resuming between Hoboken and 33rd Street, and Newark to World Trade Center was also operational.

New York City Emergency Management also alerted commuters to the snarled service.

Jersey Transit was cross-honoring Path tickets at Hoboken, Newark, and New York’s Penn Station, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail accepted tickets at Newport, Exchange Place and Hoboken.

Bus lines and ferries followed suit as commuters scrambled to find alternate routes, with New York Waterway cross-honoring Path tickets at Hoboken, Brookfield and Midtown, PANYNJ said.

“PATH employees and JCFD are on the scene,” Port Authority said. “The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
