Son of former NFL player Milton Stegall found dead in dorm room

Chase Stegall, the son of former NFL player Milton Stegall and a soccer player at DePaul University, was found dead in his dorm room on Monday.

Stegall, a 20-year-old sophomore, was discovered unresponsive around 8:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Chicago school and the Cook County Medical Examiner. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His loss will be deeply felt across our entire athletics and university family, and his memory will forever be a part of DePaul University,” athletics director DeWayne Peevy and men’s soccer coach Mark Plotkin said in a joint statement.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine his cause and manner of death.

Stegall reportedly had a history of seizures, which he wrote about in a post published on DePaul’s website in February.

“My teammates and friends constantly checked up on me, too. They’d helped me get to the hospital, and sent me texts to make sure I was doing OK,” he said. “Their kindness, their care, stayed with me.”

Stegall, a midfielder, played in 16 of the team’s 17 games this past season.

His father, Milt Stegall, played in the NFL for three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and in the Canadian Football League for 14 years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
