South Brunswick, NJ high schooler arrested after knife threats

A New Jersey high school student was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly bringing a knife to school and threatening their classmates, according to police.

The 17-year-old student has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and making terroristic threats after threatening two other students, the South Brunswick Police Department said in a news statement.

The teen’s identity was not made public.

The incident occurred at South Brunswick High School shortly after 2 p.m., when two students reported the threats to a school resource officer, who abruptly put the school on lockdown. A dozen South Brunswick police officers responded to the scene, where they found the student in a classroom with a folding knife.

The lockdown was lifted less than an hour later after the suspect was taken into custody. While there were no injuries reported, police said they’d be an added law enforcement presence at the school for the next few days.

South Brunswick is a township in Middlesex County about 40 miles south of New York City.
