A New Jersey high school student was taken into custody Tuesday morning for allegedly stabbing a fellow student, school officials said.
The incident at Fort Lee High School prompted a massive police presence in the area and sent the school into lockdown, Superintendent Robert Kravitz said in a message posted on the school’s website.
In a letter sent to parents and students, Kravitz said the stabbing had taken place “within the school building” but added there was no “immediate threat” to the school community.
The letter was shared on social media by State Sen. Holly Schepisi, who urged people in the area to stay away from the school.
According to Jeff Angermeyer, deputy chief of detectives in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, an officer stationed at the school alerted Fort Lee police about the stabbing shortly before 11 a.m.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a male student stabbed “multiple times,” NorthJersey.com reported. He was rushed to a local hospital and listed in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon, Angermeyer said.
The alleged assailant was arrested at the scene by Fort Lee police.
Neither the victim nor the suspect has been identified.
Students began being dismissed shortly before 2 p.m., according to the Fort Lee Daily Voice.
School counselors have been made available to any students or school staff in need of support, Kravitz said.
