The Sugar Bowl college football game has been postponed from Wednesday night to Thursday night following a vehicle attack that killed 10 people in New Orleans hours into the new year.
The Georgia Bulldogs and Notre Dame Fighting Irish had been scheduled to play in the quarterfinal playoff game at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Superdome in New Orleans. The game will instead be played 24 hours later.
Around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, a man drove a truck into a crowd of New Year’s Day revelers in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The attack killed at least 10 people and injured 35 more people.
The truck driver was identified hours later by police as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old man from Texas. Jabbar killed in a shootout with police. However, the FBI said Wednesday afternoon that they do not believe Jabbar acted alone in the attack, and law enforcement agencies were searching for other suspects.
Officials initially said that the Sugar Bowl would go ahead as planned despite the attack. However, as the investigation continued, authorities decided to postpone the game to 7:45 p.m. Thursday.
Security teams were dispatched to sweep the Superdome, and the building was locked down on Wednesday morning. New Orleans is also set to host the Super Bowl on Feb. 9, bringing more partiers back to the French Quarter.
