Police have arrested a suspect in the May fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man in Lower Manhattan, cops announced Sunday.
Police discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest near Pearl St. and St. James Place in Two Bridges after receiving a 911 call about an assault in progress shortly before 9 p.m. May 9.
Medics rushed the victim — later identified by police as Bronx resident Gary Fitzgerald — to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
On May 21, police arrested Michael Barbosa, 34, cops announced Sunday. Barbosa, who lives on Pearl St. — just one block away from the crime scene — is charged with murder and criminal weapons possession, according to police.
A motive behind the shooting was not immediately known.
Fitzgerald, a father of one and stepdad of two, is deeply mourned by his family.
“His laughter was music, a tune so sincere, A note of joy for all those to hear. A man of simple pleasures, but oh so profound, In the love for his family, where his joy was found,” his online obituary reads.
In addition to his family, he loved gaming and the beach, according to the obituary.
“His steps echoed laughter, his hugs could cure woes, His jokes brought the smiles, as everyone knows,” the obituary continues in endearing verse. “Funny and loving, with bravery vast, These traits of our Gary will forever last.”
Fitzgerald had two open criminal cases for assault in Manhattan at the time of his death, according to online records.
Barbosa is currently incarcerated at Rikers Island, online records show. His next court date is August 11.
