A New Jersey man has been arrested and charged with gunning down another man in Jersey City last month, authorities announced Monday.
Shakeem Clarke, 26, was charged with first-degree murder for the killing of Jamaal George, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s office said. George, 27, and Clarke were both Jersey City residents.
George was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body near Union Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive around 5 a.m. on Sept. 28, authorities said. The scene is about three miles west of the World Trade Center.
First responders transported George to Jersey City Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Police did not publicly release other details of the shooting.
Clarke was arrested on Friday at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s office in Secaucus and transported to jail ahead of his first court appearance, the office said. Authorities did not reveal what evidence led them to identify Clarke as the gunman.
In addition to first-degree murder, Clarke was charged with endangering an injured victim and three weapons crimes. He previously attended Caldwell University and is listed on the school’s 2017 football roster.
George’s killing was Jersey City’s 10th homicide of 2025, according to city statistics. Last year, the city recorded only seven killings, a historic low. Back in 2014, the 300,000-person municipality saw 24 homicides.
