A Volkswagen driver fatally struck a man in a hit-and-run on a Bronx freeway, cops said Tuesday.
The operator of a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas was cruising in the center lane heading east Monday on the Bruckner Expressway before slamming into the man at Morrison Ave. in Soundview around 9:30 p.m.
The victim, believed to be in his 30s, was thrown to the pavement in the right lane and suffered trauma to the head and body.
The driver jumped out of the midsize SUV and ran off, leaving the vehicle in the expressway’s center lane.
The victim died at the scene, cops said. It wasn’t immediately clear why he was on the expressway.
No arrests have been made. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the collision.
The Volkswagen was caught speeding in a school zone in the Bronx in 2025, though it wasn’t clear if it was the same driver, sources said.
On Sunday, also in the Bronx, nearly 4 miles away from the Soundview hit-and-run, a man lying in the roadway in Morris Heights was fatally struck by the driver of an unidentified car.
The motorist was heading south in the left lane around 10:40 p.m. at Grand Concourse and East Burnside Ave. when he ran over the person lying on the street. The driver took off, failing to remain at the scene to report the incident, though it’s unclear if the driver was aware of the collision
EMS transported the victim to Saint Barnabas Hospital where he died.
No arrests have been made.
