Sydney Sweeney has entered the boxing ring.
The “Euphoria” actress, 27, transforms into pro boxer Christy Martin, 57, in the first trailer for the upcoming biopic, “Christy.”
The footage released Thursday, set to Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen,” features a moment where Sweeney’s Martin gets punched right in the face by an opponent in the ring.
“I think I found my thing. I bet most people go their entire lives and don’t know what their thing is,” Sweeney’s Martin says on the phone to someone, as she puts everything towards her boxing career.
The trailer also explores the pro athlete’s relationships with her conservative parents, dad John (Ethan Embry) and mom Joyce (Merritt Weaver), and her coach-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).
“I spent half my life hiding,” Sweeney’s Martin says at the end of the trailer. “It’s my house. It’s my things. It’s my dream.”
The film’s description reads: “Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Foster).”
“But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death,” the description adds. “Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
Directed by David Michôd, “Christy” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last week and got a rapturous standing ovation, which left Sweeney in tears.
“Christy, you are absolutely incredible, and I’m so honored. I’m gonna cry! Oh my God, you’re so inspirational,” the actress told Martin at the premiere.
“And so being able to have her by my side during this process was a dream, but then also just scary too, because you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh. Like, we’re, we’re doing this in front of her!’” Sweeney added.
The Post’s entertainment critic Johnny Oleksinski gave “Christy” three out of four stars and called Sweeney’s performance “a total knockout.”
The “Anyone But You” actress underwent an incredible transformation to play Martin. She trained for over three months by boxing and weightlifting for several hours a day and packing on between 30 and 35 pounds.
Sweeney also refused to use a stunt double for the role.
“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair in a recent interview.
Martin made her boxing debut in 1989. After defeating Deirdre Gogarty in front of a sold-out crowd at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand in March 1996, she became the first female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.
In 2010, Martin’s husband stabbed her several times and shot her in the chest at their Apopka, Fla., home.
She survived the near-death experience, and James was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Martin later came out as gay and married Lisa Holewyne in 2017.
“Christy” will be released in theaters on Nov. 7.
