‘Taxi’ cast reunites to celebrate Danny DeVito theater event

The cast of “Taxi” reunited again this week in New York City to celebrate Danny DeVito’s theater honor, 42 years after the Emmy-winning sitcom turned off its cab light.

Christopher Lloyd, Carol Kane, Tony Danza, Marilu Henner, Judd Hirsch and series co-creator James L. Brooks all posed with 80-year-old DeVito Monday when he was honored with the Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre, according to Today.com.

The event was hosted by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The New Jersey native was nominated for a Tony Award in 2017 for his role in “The Price,” which also netted him a Drama Desk Award.

DeVito made his stage debut in 1969 in an Off-Broadway adaptation of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” He played Martini, a role he reprised in the 1975 Oscar-winning film adaptation alongside Jack Nicholson.

Sharing a photo of the cast on stage (minus DeVito), “Saturday Night Live” alum Rachel Dratch dubbed the actors “some of the friendliest celebs I ever did meet.

“(And of course, @therealmarilu remembered exactly how long it’s been to the day since ‘Taxi”s last episode!)”

“The fact is that we have kept each other’s company in a close and loving way for all these years since ‘Taxi,’” Kane told People in August.

That series finale aired on NBC on June 15, 1983, concluding a five-season run that garnered 34 Emmy nominations and 18 wins.

The show, which centered on a New York City taxicab company, premiered on ABC in September 1978, ultimately being dropped by ABC and picked up by the peacock for its final season.

“Taxi” is hardly the only beloved property co-created by three-time Oscar winner Brooks.

The “Broadcast News” and “As Good as It Gets” writer-director also co-created “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970 and “The Simpsons” nearly 20 years later.

The latest “Taxi” reunion comes nearly two years after Danza, Hirsch, Kane and Lloyd dined out together and shared a selfie from their lunch in May 2023.

Later that year, DeVito and Rhea Perlman — to whom he’s still married though they’ve been separated since 2012 — reunited with Danza and Kane at the premiere of Perlman’s play, “Let’s Call Her Patty,” at Lincoln Center Theater.

The Emmy-winning “Cheers” star, 76, also appeared on several episodes of “Taxi.”
