Teen charged with stabbing woman in neck at Manhattan migrant shelter

A 19-year-old man has been charged with stabbing a woman in the neck at a Manhattan shelter for migrants, police said Wednesday.

Jonathan Manu is charged with attempted murder, assault and weapon possession.

He allegedly attacked a 41-year-old woman during an argument at the Bowery Hanbee Hotel on Grand St. near the Bowery on Tuesday afternoon.

Medics took the woman to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

Police said she knows Manu though their relationship was not clear.t.

The hotel sparked controversy in 2022, when there were plans to transition it into a drop-in homeless shelter and Safe Haven facility. But community opposition defeated that plan and it instead later became a shelter for newly-arrived migrants.

Cathy Glasson, a longtime neighborhood resident, said the migrant shelter seems to be well run.

“The facility has been a very good neighbor since it became a shelter for immigrant families,” she told The News Tuesday.
