An 18-year-old man was killed and a 23-year-old man wounded in a hail of gunfire early Monday morning near Yale’s campus in downtown New Haven, Conn., authorities said.
Dillon Cornelius was identified hours later as the deceased victim, New Haven police said in a social media post. The wounded man was not publicly identified.
No suspects have been arrested or named in the shooting. Cops said numerous shots were fired around 3 a.m. on College St., between Crown St. and Chapel St. Several businesses and vehicles were damaged by the gunfire, but only two people were struck.
Cops were on bar duty near the scene, which sits less than a mile south of Yale’s main campus, New Haven police said. They ran toward the shooting location after hearing gunfire and arrived to find Cornelius suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Cornelius was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officers were at the hospital when the 23-year-old man walked in with a graze wound. He told investigators he’d been shot while downtown. Police have not yet found any other connection between the two victims.
New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson told local ABC affiliate WTNH that Cornelius was “known to police.”
“There are different groups that are beefing,” Jacobson told the station. “We don’t just have the regular bar let-out to deal with, we have these other situations going on.”
