The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is the record that keeps on giving.
The 2019 track has officially become the first song in Spotify’s history to hit a whopping five billion streams. Just days earlier, it landed on Billboard’s Top Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century chart.
Spotify announced the news over the long weekend.
“On August 31st, 2025, The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” became the first song to reach 5 billion streams on Spotify,” the streaming giant captioned its post.
The Weeknd, 35, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, took a moment to celebrate his history-making accomplishment with his 78 million followers.
Taking to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, the four-time Grammy winner reposted Spotify’s announcement before gearing up for his second concert in Houston, Texas.
The stop was part of his “After Hours til Dawn Stadium Tour,” which kicked off in May and is expected to run until its last show on September 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Fans immediately took to social media to celebrate the success of “Blinding Lights.”
“MAKING HISTORY,” one person commented on Spotify’s post. “This is so ICONIC!!! the goat 🐐 🔥,” wrote a second.
“The owner of the Billions Club 🔥,” shared a third, while someone else replied, “This album is the best of de Decade and probably the century🔥🔥 Abel Making history.”
Other fans called The Weeknd a “legend” and “the greatest artist of our generation.”
The Post reached out to his team for comment.
“Blinding Lights” was the second single from the singer’s fourth studio album, “After Hours,” and it was an instant success upon its release in November 2019.
The Weeknd’s catchy synthwave hit dominated Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for four weeks and stayed in the top 10 for a whole year, making it the first song to do so.
In November 2021, it surpassed Chubby Checker’s 1958 dance anthem “The Twist” on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 chart, another history-making accomplishment.
The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” success didn’t stop there.
Fast-forward to January 2024, when the yearsold song became the first to reach four billion streams on Spotify.
At the time, he released a statement about the achievement.
“I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people let alone billions!” The Weeknd said in response. “I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.”
“Blinding Lights” is also one of The Weeknd’s 28 songs with a home in Spotify’s Billions Club, more than any other artist, according to Billboard.
Despite the song’s success, it never earned The Weeknd a Grammy or nomination.
He went on to win four Gramophones: Best Urban Contemporary Album for his second studio album, “Beauty Behind The Madness,” Best R&B Performance for “Earned It” from “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” another Best Urban Contemporary Album win for his 2016 “Starboy” and Best Melodic Rap Performance for his 2021 song with Kanye West “Hurricane.”
“Blinding Lights,” however, won other trophies at shows like the MTV Video Music Awards (2020), iHeartRadio Music Awards (2021) and Billboard Music Awards (2021).
