Thieves grab $10,000 in jewelry from Waterbury mall store

Police in Waterbury, Connecticut are investigating a smash-and-grab heist in which thieves made off with $10,000 worth of jewelry from a mall kiosk.

Two black-clad, masked men burst into the Banter Jewelry stall in the Brass Mill Center shopping mall at 8:31 p.m. Saturday, according to WFSB-TV. They shattered display cases with a hammer, grabbed their loot and bolted, Waterbury police Sgt. Joseph Morais told Connecticut Insider.

Morais said no one was injured and that police are on the hunt for suspects, but did not provide further details. The store’s posted Saturday closing time is 8 p.m., and it was not clear whether anyone was there at the time.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Waterbury Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Banter is the new iteration of Piercing Pagoda, which was established in 1969 and has “pierced millions of ears,” according to its website — and is one of dozens of stores at the Brass Mill Center mall. The company added Banter to the original name in 2021, becoming Banter by Piercing Pagoda.
