Tim Hill gives up HR that spoils Yankees’ chance of securing sweep over White Sox

After sweeping a three-game series against the Washington Nationals, the Yankees looked to secure a second consecutive sweep with a win Sunday over the Chicago White Sox.

But in a 2-2 game in the bottom of the eighth inning, White Sox first baseman Lenyn Sosa hit a solo home run off Tim Hill that served as the go-ahead run.

Shortly after, the Yankees failed to rally in the top of the ninth, giving Chicago a 3-2 win at Rate Field. The loss ended the Yankees’ win streak at seven games.

The White Sox twice came from behind to tie the game against the Yankees.

Aaron Judge got the game started with his 43rd home run of the season in the first. The blast tied him with Yogi Berra for fifth place on the Yankees’ all-time homer list with 358.

But, Chicago’s Will Robertson hit an RBI double in the second that tied the game at 1-1.

In the following inning, Judge recorded his MLB-leading 72nd extra-base hit — Corbin Carroll ranked second at 71 before Arizona’s afternoon game — then later scored when Cody Bellinger doubled to right, making the score 2-1.

The lead was again undone with Colson Montgomery‘s solo home run in the sixth off of Yankees starter Luis Gil. Gil, who hadn’t allowed a hit since the Robertson’s RBI double in the second, retired 10 straight batters before Montgomery hit his 15th homer of the season.

Montgomery initially stopped at third as the ball landed back into the outfield and was fielded by Bellinger.

Umpires later awarded the shortstop the homer after deeming the ball landed beyond the yellow line over the center field wall. Gil’s outing ended after walking the next batter, finishing his day with four hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

Fernando Cruz held the White Sox hitless over 1.2 innings of work before Hill took the mound.

The reliable lefty hadn’t allowed a run since Aug. 10, but fell victim to Sosa’s go-ahead homer.

The Bombers had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning after Trent Grisham worked a leadoff walk on Cam Booser. Closer Mike Vasil then entered and got Paul Goldschmidt and Judge to flyout.

Vasil secured his third save of the season after getting a borderline strikeout call on Bellinger to end the game.
