When Tom Cruise speaks, Glen Powell listens.
In Tuesday’s GQ Magazine cover story, Powell, 36, revealed that his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-star helped him navigate drama in his personal life.
Cruise, 63, gave the “Twisters” star advice after his ex-girlfriend, Gigi Paris, slammed Powell’s “PR scheme” relationship with his “Anyone But You” co-star, Sydney Sweeney, in June.
“[Tom] basically said, ‘Hey, it’s going to get really, really loud. It’s your job to just turn the volume down. Just remember you have your hand on that switch. You have your hand on the ability to turn up that noise or turn it down,’” Powell told GQ.
“And really just turning down the noise and trusting your own gut has been a real godsend for me,” the “Chad Powers” actor shared.
Powell and Cruise have been close since working together in the 2022 “Top Gun” sequel. In April, Powell said at CinemaCon that he called Cruise for advice about how to run on camera after he was cast in the upcoming “The Running Man” remake.
“What’s been amazing about my relationship with Tom is the fact he’s a guy that doesn’t hide his excitement. He loves the theatrical experience and working hard and putting your body on the line to entertain audiences,” Powell said at the event.
Speaking to GQ, Powell publicly commented on Paris’ remarks about their breakup for the first time.
“I will always have nothing but love for her and respect for her,” he said. “Everybody’s always going to have their own narrative on things and all that. And she’s welcome to it.”
“Relationships are really hard,” the Hollywood star added. “And when two people break up, they each go to their own brunch and they will each tell their own narrative.”
While appearing on the “Too Much” podcast in June, Paris called Powell out for leaning into the romance rumors with Sweeney when they were promoting their 2023 rom-com.
“I just wanted respect, especially if it’s gonna be public,” Paris said. “Like, don’t make an ass out of me. Like, just don’t make a fool out of someone you’ve been with for over three years talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know?”
“Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn’t do that.’ That’s all that needed to be said,” Paris continued. “And that wasn’t said … Never once.”
Paris also claimed that the “Hidden Figures” actor dumped her when he was shooting “Anyone But You” in Australia.
“I had lost whoever that person was that I loved,” she said.
Both Powell and Sweeney confirmed they leaned into the romance rumors to market “Anyone But You.”
“That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully,” Powell told the New York Times in April 2024.
The year before, Sweeney told Variety, “It’s a rom-com. That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much.”
Sweeney broke off her engagement to former fiancé Jonathan Davino earlier this year. She’s been recently linked to record executive Scooter Braun, 44.
