With the Mets already signing a few big league free agents away from the Yankees this offseason, the Queens club has now plucked a coveted international prospect away from the Bombers.
Wandy Asigen, a 16-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, is expected to sign a $3.8 million deal with the Mets when the international signing period opens on Jan. 15, according to multiple reports. Asigen, considered the second-best prospect in the 2026 international class by MLB.com, previously had a $4.3 million agreement in place with the Yankees.
Francys Romero first reported Asigen’s flip to the Mets.

Asigen’s switch comes just a few months after the Yankees severed ties with Donny Rowland, their long-time international scouting director. The team has yet to find a replacement for Rowland, whose contract expired earlier this offseason.
Earlier this week, a source told the Daily News that the Yankees were still in the process of interviewing candidates for the position.
While Rowland hit on some cheaper signings and landed Jasson Domínguez, the Yankees moved on after spending millions on high-priced international prospects who didn’t or have yet to pan out over the years.
“Like anything else, you gotta make some very difficult decisions,” Cashman said earlier this offseason. “I’ve been involved with Donny Rowland for a long time. Obviously, we have worked alongside each other for a long time, and he’s run the department for quite some time. But fork in the road, contract had expired, and so I made the difficult decision to look for a different lead voice in that chair. So that’s what we’re doing at this stage.”
According to MLB.com’s scouting report, a case can be made that Asigen has “the most advanced offensive profile among his class” despite being young for it. A left-handed hitter, he regularly records exit velocities over 110 mph and has a knack for finding the barrel.
On defense, the speedy Puerto Plata native’s arm is considered average, which could eventually mean a move off of shortstop.
