Travis Kelce, in an old-school move, asked Taylor Swift’s father for his blessing to marry her weeks before proposing to the “Karma” singer.
“I was talking to Scott Swift and Travis went to ask him for permission. This was probably a month ago,” Kelce’s father, Ed, revealed during a Tuesday appearance on the “Jimmy & Nath Show with Emma.”
The Kansas City Chiefs star’s dad also shared how ecstatic he is about the engagement, revealing he’d been pressing his son to pop the question.
“He didn’t come to me for advice so much as I went to him to tell him, you know, ‘Get this done,’” Ed said, going on to share more details of the planning that went into the proposal.
“Travis had these plans to do it the next weekend before flying out to Brazil. He was going to make a big production out of it some place, wanted to make it a bit special,” he explained.
“I told him the same thing Scott told him, ‘Asking her is what’s going to make it special.’ It’s not where you do it. … You could do it on the side of the road. Scott adds, ‘Just get it done. Don’t worry about any special date. You’re ready, you got the ring, go do it.’”
The 35-year-old ultimately took the advice of his father and soon-to-be father-in-law, and proposed nearly two weeks ago in the garden at his home in Leawood, Kansas.
“They were going out to dinner and she was ready to go and he said, ‘Let’s go out in the garden on the patio and have a glass of wine before we go,’” Ed revealed. “I think she knew something was up because as they walked out there, she could see, suddenly, there were a lot more flowers out there.”
Although the proud father didn’t know exactly when the pair would take the next step, he said the engagement didn’t come as much of a surprise.
“The family on both sides kind of assumed that this was going to happen because we’ve never seen our kids so happy,” he said. “I think it’s wonderful. These are two young people madly in love with each other and I think this is great.”
