Sondra Williams, the wife of 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams, has gone public with the stillbirth of her son Trenton O’Brien Williams Jr. at 35 weeks, after losing his twin early on in her pregnancy.
“It’s been extremely hard trying to process the saddest Hello and Goodbye that I’ve ever had to endure,” Williams wrote on Instagram Sunday, alongside a poignant video showing a sonogram and the child himself after delivery. “Last Sunday night on 11/24/24; I welcomed your lifeless 4lb 8oz 18.5 in long little body at 11:38pm. At only 35 weeks, your impactful and quick arrival didn’t even give mommy time to get an epidural.”
Williams expressed gratitude for those who were by her side, including the baby’s aunt who cut the umbilical cord, and a nurse.
“I can’t even begin to describe how I felt leaving the hospital without you,” Williams wrote. “Nor how it feels being home celebrating Thanksgiving without my baby in my arms. My heart is broken and my arms are empty. But I know you’ll always be near watching over me and your sisters. And for that, my heart smiles with gratitude.”
Trenton would have joined big sisters Micah, 15, MaKayla, 11 and Madison, 2.
“My firstborn and only son, I’ve always wanted you, but God wanted and needed you more,” she wrote. “My heart is heavy. Being home without you in my arms has been quite an adjustment. Knowing I will never be able to watch you grow older alongside your sisters has my eyes filled with tears.”
Williams also revealed that Trenton had been diagnosed with trisomy 13, also known as Patau syndrome, a rare genetic abnormality that occurs when an extra copy of chromosome 13 latches onto a pair of chromosomes. It affects fetal development and is often fatal or leads to miscarriage, according to the National Library of Medicine.
