Troubled suspect shoots 7 San Antonio police officers before being found dead

Seven police officers were shot and wounded by a barricaded suspect as they responded to reports of a “suicide in progress” at an apartment building in San Antonio, Tex., according to authorities.

The suspect on Thursday was identified as 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos, News4 San Antonio reported.

Officers on Wednesday were called to the Sonterra Heights apartment complex off Stone Oak Parkway by one of Poulos’ family members, SAPD Chief William P. McManus said in a video posted to Facebook. When police arrived at the scene around 9 p.m., they were met by a woman who warned them of a man shooting inside the building. The suspect then walked outside and opened fire.

“The first officer who arrived was shot and six others subsequent to that were shot, as well,” McManus said.

The conditions of the wounded cops were unclear as of Thursday, but none of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening. Their tenure with the department ranges between four and eight years, and they have been placed on administrative duty until further notice.

A SWAT team also responded to the apartment complex, where an hours-long standoff ensued with the barricaded suspect.

“At the end of the event, the suspect was found to be deceased,” McManus said. “We don’t know if he was shot by a self-inflicted wound or whether or not he was shot by SWAT officers.”

McManus provided few other details, but the chief did confirm Poulos had been arrested just days before the incident.

Poulos had been taken into custody Saturday on charges including assault causing bodily injury to a family member, two counts of injury to a child, elderly or disabled person with intent bodily injury, and one count of DWI. He was released on bond the following day and his case was referred to veterans court, where he was ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.
