President Trump will attend the U.S. Open men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on Sunday afternoon.
Broadcasters have been ordered to censor any protest against Trump, who will be shown on camera during the National Anthem before the match, according to tennis outlet Bounces.
“We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity,” the U.S. Tennis Association wrote in an email obtained by Bounces.
Trump often attends major sporting events, and he was a frequent U.S. Open attendee back when he lived in New York before he launched his political career. Since taking office, Trump has largely attended football, golf and combat sports events.
In fact, sitting presidents almost never attend the U.S. Open men’s final, with Bill Clinton being the last to do so in 2000. It hasn’t helped that no American men have won the tournament since 2003, though Taylor Fritz made last year’s final.
Trump was invited to attend the final in the Rolex suite. His Trump Organization previously had a suite in Arthur Ashe Stadium as well but stopped using it in 2017 during his first term as president.
Alcaraz and Sinner are widely regarded as the two best players of their generation and Sunday’s highly anticipated match will be the third time they square off in a grand slam final this year.
