President Trump said he believes God is “very proud” of the job he has done as president, pointing to his record on religion, border security and the economy while addressing reporters at the White House on the first anniversary of his second term in office.
“I think God is very proud of the job I’ve done, and that includes for religion,” Trump said, adding that his administration has worked to protect religious groups facing violence.
“We’re protecting a lot of people that are being killed — Christians, Jewish people,” Trump said. “Lots of people are being protected by me that wouldn’t be protected by another type of president.”
Trump described the past year as one of the strongest in American history, saying even some critics have acknowledged the results.
“I think a lot of people are very proud of the job we’ve done,” he said. “We’ve had an amazing year. This has been one of the greatest years. Even some people that wouldn’t necessarily love me instinctively, they’re saying this was an incredible year.”
The president also highlighted border security, calling the situation he inherited “the worst border in the world” and blaming it for allowing criminals into the country.
“People poured in — it was an invasion,” Trump said. “A lot of very bad people from prisons and drug dealers and gangs and horrible people, murderers — thousands and thousands of murderers allowed into our country.”
He said that has now changed dramatically.
“We now have the strongest border of any country,” Trump said. “There’s probably not a country in the world that has a border like we do.”
