Donald Trump is now threatening to use his tariff weapon against America’s best friends in Europe over Greenland. The U.S. Supreme Court must rule soon that Trump’s use of these tariffs without congressional assent, starting with his April 2 “Liberation Day” imposition of worldwide trade duties, is illegal.
On Saturday, Trump said that Denmark and seven other NATO allies, coming to the aid of the Danes in retaining their Greenland territory against Trump’s demand for a sale, would be smacked with 10% additional tariffs on Feb. 1 and increasing to 25% on June 1, “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”
Greenland, which has hosted U.S. troops since World War II, doesn’t want to be sold and Denmark doesn’t want to sell it. When Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., The Netherlands, and Finland, sent forces to Greenland to stand with the Danes, Trump issued his tariff threat.
The justices need to take this toy away from Trump.
