Two fatalities on NY highways within an hour include man trying to cross the Major Deegan


A 62-year-old man was killed early Friday as he tried to cross the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx — one of two fatal accidents in the city within a half hour, officials said.

The victim was in Van Cortlandt Park near E. 233rd St. in Woodlawn at about 5 a.m. when he tried to cross the southbound lanes of the Expressway, cops said.

A moment later, he was fatally struck by a passing Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 47-year-old man.

The man died at the scene. His name was not immediately disclosed.

EMS took the driver of the Suburban to Montefiore Medical Center with minor injuries. No charges were immediately filed.

All the Major Deegan’s southbound lanes were shut down for several hours as police conducted an investigation.

About a half hour earlier, a 50-year-old driver was killed when he rear-ended a tractor-trailer on the Long Island Expressway in Queens.

The victim was behind he wheel of a Toyota Camry, heading Manhattan-bound on the LIE when he struck the tractor trailer near Exit 22B, cops said.

EMS rushed the Toyota driver to New York Presbyterian-Queens Hospital, where he died. His name was not immediately disclosed.

A 52-year-old man driving the tractor-trailer was also taken to New York Presbyterian-Queens Hospital, where he survived.

Cops were still trying to determine what caused the crash.
