Former Manhattan Borough Presidents Gale Brewer and Ruth Messinger are throwing their weight behind state Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal’s bid to become the next beep.
Brewer and Messinger told the Daily News on Monday they’re endorsing Hoylman-Sigal for Manhattan borough president due to his track record of fighting for immigrant rights, subway safety and public school funding.
“Brad understands the importance of quality of life, and that’s reflected in his legislative record,” said Brewer, who’s currently a Council member representing the Upper West Side and served as borough president between 2014 and 2021. “I know he will continue to champion these fights as borough president.”
Messinger, who was Manhattan beep between 1990 and 1997, chimed in: “He’s delivered for New York, and he’ll deliver for Manhattan.”
Hoylman-Sigal, whose district covers much of Manhattan’s West Side, is squaring off in June’s Democratic borough president primary against term-limited Councilman Keith Powers, who first entered the race in August and has racked up dozens of endorsements from local Council members and district leaders.
Powers, who represents a district that spans Manhattan’s East Side, has raised more than $271,000 from nearly 1,000 individual donors to date, enabling him to unlock more than $300,000 in public matching funds last month.
Hoylman-Sigal, who didn’t announce his campaign until early December, has raised about $126,065 from less than 400 individual donors to date, city records show. He has not become eligible for matching funds yet.
Powers and Hoylman-Sigal jumped into the race after incumbent Manhattan BP Mark Levine announced last summer he’s running for city comptroller in June’s local elections.
Also Monday, Hoylman-Sigal rolled out endorsements from five state and city legislative colleagues, including Assemblywoman Deborah Glick and Councilman Erik Bottcher.
The local primaries are scheduled for June 24.
