Upper West Side apartment fire leaves 1 woman dead, second clinging to life

A 41-year-old woman was killed and a 77-year-old woman left clinging to life when a fire tore through an Upper West Side apartment early Thursday, officials said.

The woman who died is believed to have worked as a home health aide for the older woman, neighbors told ABC7 Eyewitness News.

The fire broke out on the 14th floor of the 15-story building on W. 73rd St. near Amsterdam Ave. about 3:15 a.m., FDNY officials said.

Firefighters pulled the two women from the apartment where the fire broke out. Both were suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, officials said.

They were both found in the bathroom, where they may fled in attempt to escape the fire, ABC7 reported.

The younger woman was taken to Mount Sinai West but couldn’t be saved. Her name was not immediately released.

Medics rushed the older woman to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell in critical condition.

The fire was put out within 45 minutes, officials said.

The fire may have been sparked by an electrical appliance, FDNY officials said.
