A U.S. Customs officer opened fire outside JFK Airport during a road rage clash sparked by a fender-bender early Tuesday, cops said.
Port Authority police responding to a 4:45 a.m. crash on the Van Wyck Expressway at the entrance to the airport’s central terminal area found the on-duty Customs and Border Protection officer at the scene.
The Customs officer said he got into a fender-bender, with the driver of the other vehicle then attacking him.
During the fight, the Customs officer whpped out his service weapon and opened fire at his attacker, who jumped back into his vehicle and sped off without being struck. The Customs officer continued to shoot, hitting the fleeing vehicle, ABC7NY Eyewitness News reported.
The other driver was gone by the time Port Authority police arrived and has not yet been located.
No arrests have been made as Port Authority cops continue to question the Customs officer.
Cops shut down the southbound lanes of the Van Wyck for several hours as they continued their probe. One lane was opened to traffic at about 7 a.m.
The Port Authority warned travelers using JFK Airport to expect delays and follow detours as the investigation continued.
