Vandal cuts signal wires, snarls rush hour subway service on 2, 3, 4 and 5 lines



Straphangers were delayed on the Nos. 2, 3 4 and 5 lines Tuesday evening after a vandal allegedly cut and attempted to steal wires critical to the subway signaling system, the Daily News has learned.

New York City Transit officials reported a signal failure on the line serving the Nos. 2 and 5 trains shortly before 5:15 p.m. Tuesday near the 149th St. – Grand Concourse station. The outage snarled traffic between Manhattan and the Bronx during the evening rush hour in both directions.

Some uptown No. 2 trains were re-routed along the No. 5 line for the length of Manhattan, and others ended their run at the 137th St. – City College station.

A man was taken into custody shortly before 5:30 p.m. for allegedly cutting wires to a piece of signal infrastructure at 149th St. – Grand Concourse, and MTA work crews were on site.

The MTA referred all inquiries on the matter to the NYPD, spokespersons for whom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
