The power couple is revealing what came between them.
In the new Netflix documentary “Victoria Beckham,” premiering Thurs. Oct 9, Victoria, 51, and David, 50, open up about a difficult time in their marriage.
In 2016, Victoria’s fashion brand was growing and getting “great reviews,” but it was “slipping through my fingers,” she said.
David was “investing a lot” in her business, and “we were tens of millions of pounds in the red,” Victoria explained.
Her fashion brand had earned respect in the industry, but financially it was floundering.
“It made me panic. I was panicked by it. Because I never saw anything coming back,” David said onscreen, referring to his investment in his wife’s business.
The former Manchester United star added, “We always agreed that we would support each other no matter what, but it worried me. This isn’t sustainable.”
Victoria’s business was ultimately saved by investor David Belhassen in 2017, she said.
But before Belhassen got involved, “I didn’t know what to do….I felt embarrassed…I was really desperate,” Victoria said
When she went home to her husband, “I would talk to him about it, and I hated it, I absolutely hated it.”
The soccer star explained that around 2016, “We both sat there, and we looked at what I invested…part of that conversation broke my heart, because Victoria is a proud woman.”
David said, “When we met, she was richer than me.”
The Beckhams lived in their extravagant first house in Hertfordshire, England, which was nicknamed “Beckingham Palace,” from 1999 until 2013.
“She actually bought our first house,” David noted. “So for her to have to come to me and say, ‘the business needs more money,’ that was hard for both of us. Because I didn’t have the money to keep doing this. And eventually, I was like, ‘this cannot continue.’”
The three-part docuseries is about Victoria’s life, from her rise to the Spice Girls to her relationship with David, to her transition into the fashion industry and her preparations for a high-stakes fashion show in Paris.
“Victoria Beckham” comes two years after the hit 2023 Netflix documentary “Beckham,” which focused on David, his life, career, and their marriage.
Victoria and David, who have been married since 1999, share four kids: Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14.
Unlike “Beckham,” this documentary doesn’t address the allegation that he once had an affair.
It also doesn’t address the rumors of an ongoing feud between Brooklyn, his wife Nicola Peltz 30, and the rest of the family – but, Brooklyn is conspicuously the only Beckham kid absent from the doc.
At one point in “Victoria Beckham,” the former pop star also revealed her husband’s habit that she finds “embarrassing.”
When they attend events, “David always likes to leave early,” she said. “We literally went to a birthday party the other day, and we were there before the host. It’s actually embarrassing – we were there before the waiting staff!”
“Victoria Beckham” premieres Thurs. Oct. 9 on Netflix.
