In 1987, the Blue Man Group was founded by friends Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
Four years later, the performance artist pals began a residency at NYC’s Astor Place Theatre.
Since then, they’ve delivered 17,000+ rousing performances featuring trios of bald, blue men at the 281- seat LES venue. Memorable showpieces from years past include vibrant paint drumming, imaginative choreographed dances and striking nonverbal physical comedy bits; personally, we’re partial to the interactive audience participation gags that often leave crowds speechless. No matter what, each time the silent Blue Men have taken the stage is a reminder of what New York’s lively art and theater scene could and can be: a place where no idea is wrong and anything can be shaped into thrilling, mind-bending, joyous entertainment.
Sadly, on Feb. 2, 2025, the Blue Men will make merry for the last time in their Astor Place home.
The ensemble isn’t exactly calling it quits — the Blue Man Group will live on in Las Vegas, Boston, Orlando and Berlin for the foreseeable future — but this is all she wrote for New York, for now.
