Woman, boy killed in flash flooding near Oklahoma City, more rain expected

An adult woman and a 12-year-old boy were killed in flash flooding near Oklahoma City and weather forecasters warned of more rain ahead on Sunday.

Two vehicles became stuck in floodwaters in the southern OKC suburb of Moore around 9 p.m. Saturday, the local police department said in a Facebook post.

One of the vehicles was swept under a bridge. While rescuers were able to save some people inside the car, the woman and the 12-year-old boy were killed, according to Moore police.

“This was a historical weather event that impacted roads and resulted in dozens of high-water incidents across the city,” the department wrote.

Multiple water rescues occurred across Moore and other Oklahoma City suburbs on Saturday, local CBS affiliate KWTV reported.

More dangerous weather was expected on Sunday in eastern Oklahoma and into Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas, according to the National Weather Service. Dozens of counties in the area were placed on flood watches. Several areas were also under tornado watches.

“The associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, small streams and low-lying areas the most vulnerable,” NWS forecasters wrote. “The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail and a few tornadoes.”

The severe weather threat was expected to dissipate across Oklahoma and surrounding states by Monday. Smaller less dangerous rainstorms were predicted for the Tennessee Valley and Ohio Valley.
