Woman fatally struck by Genesis G80 driver ‘doing donuts’ in Brooklyn plaza parking lot

A woman was fatally struck by a sedan whose driver was “doing donuts” outside a Brooklyn Dave and Busters parking lot in Gateway plaza, cops said Monday.

Madison Ruiz, 21, was sitting alongside a curb at the parking lot of the arcade on July 13 around 12:30 a.m. near Erskine St. and Gateway Drive in East New York when Zachary Cando, 24, driving a 2023 Genesis G80, veered and struck Ruiz.

In a statement following the incident, Cando told police he “lost control” when he was “doing donuts” with the vehicle, according to court documents.

EMS transported Ruiz to Brookdale Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

The term “Doing Donuts” is slang referring to driving a car in a continuous circular motion, causing the vehicle to drift on two wheels.

Cando stayed at the scene, and was arrested hours later, charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. At his arraignment Sunday night at Brooklyn Criminal Court, he was ordered held on bail of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
