An upstate New York woman was found dead in a submerged car in a pond in Otsego County, New York State Police said Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Richfield Springs woman was driving a Mitsubishi Mirage on Cole Hill Road when she failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with U.S. Route 20 and went off the road into the pond, troopers said, citing a preliminary investigation.
The incident is believed to have occurred overnight, but it wasn’t until Tuesday morning that a passerby saw what appeared to be a portion of the vehicle sticking out of the water and called 911.
Troopers later found the vehicle and discovered the victim inside.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was declared dead at the scene.
A picture shared by police shows part of the vehicle sticking out of the water.
The NYSP Underwater Recovery Team assisted at the scene, along with Richfield Fire/EMS and the Otsego County coroner.
Richfield Springs, a village of just over 1,000 people in the Town of Richfield, is about 70 miles northwest of Albany.
