Woman found dead in snow next to North Jersey retention pond

A woman was found dead next to a retention pond in Monmouth County, N.J., authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified woman was discovered around 1 p.m. Monday in Neptune Township after a bystander called police to report a person lying in the snow wearing only a shirt and shorts, Neptune Township police wrote on Facebook.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was found between Restaurant Depot and the Residence Inn on Jumping Brook Rd., reported NJ.com.

Cops did not publicly speculate on the woman’s cause of death.

“The investigation is ongoing, and police are making efforts to notify the next of kin,” cops wrote. “There is no known threat to the public.”

Temperatures were below freezing in Neptune Township all day on Monday. They reached as low as 21 degrees around 8 a.m., with consistent wind gusts between 15 and 20 mph throughout the day.

Across the tristate area, local leaders warned residents ahead of the storm to stay inside. Shelters were opened in many cities for people with nowhere else to go.

Temperatures remained icy on Tuesday and were expected to remain in the teens and 20s all the way into Friday. According to city data, about 15 people in New York City die from cold weather conditions each year.
