A woman shot dead in her daughter’s Harlem apartment had been staying there since separating with her longtime boyfriend about two months ago, the slain woman’s family said Wednesday.
Basilisa Negron was shot three times in the bathroom of her oldest daughter’s home on W. 141st St. near Malcolm X. Blvd. at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, cops said.
Negron’s brother hadn’t seen the victim for about a year, but the victim planned to visit him in Pennsylvania soon, a joyful reunion that will now never take place.
“She was gonna come to my house after Christmas,” her brother, Jay Romero, 44, said. Another of Negron’s daughters was going to bring her infant to see the victim in Pennsylvania.
Negron had seven children, three of them with the boyfriend she’d recently split with, and four granddaughters, the oldest being 11. The daughter she was staying with was from an earlier relationship, Romero said.
“She was all for her kids. She was a free spirit. She wanted the best for her kids, her grandkids, for the whole family,” added her 43-year-old sister-in-law who declined to give her name.
“She went beyond expectations for her kids, helping them out, buying them stuff. She was there for them when they needed anything or had a problem.”
Cops have not yet publicly identified a person of interest in her slaying.
“[Her daughter] wasn’t there. She actually went to the store, and that’s when [the shooter] broke in the house and killed her,” Romero said.
The daughter came home to find her mother dead.
“She’s pretty broken,” the sister-in-law said. “Every time she closes her eyes she just sees her mother there.”
Romero called his sister a devoted and loving sibling and mother.
Negron was the oldest of her siblings.
“She was a loving person,” Romero said. “She’s always trying to help people. She’s always doing whatever she can. Even if she had the last dollar, she would have gave it to you just to help you out.”

Negron ran a custom shirts business, her sister-in-law said.
“It was creative,” she said. “If you had a party and you want a custom shirt, she used to do it.”
“She was a great mom to her kids. Even though they were grown and they had their partners and everything, she was always in their lives,” she added. “She was the kind of mom that she had to speak to her kids every day. If she didn’t see them personally, she had to speak to them.”
The sister-in-law said her family is taking the loss hard.
“My husband is broken,” she said. “I’m trying to keep everyone positive.”
