A woman and two children suffered burns when a manhole exploded and blew its heavy cast-iron lid off in lower Manhattan on Thursday, cops said.
The victims, including a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, were injured in the explosion that originated below Warren and Church Sts. in Tribeca shortly before 4 p.m., according to police.
The woman and kids suffered burns to their faces and shoulders, police said. They were taken to NY Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital in stable condition.
During winter, wet road salt can seep into manholes, corroding electrical cables’ insulation, causing sparks and gas that can then combust under pressure.
