X appeared to suffer a widespread outage on Friday morning as users across the US took to Downdetector and reported problems posting, loading feeds and refreshing timelines.
Reports poured in from major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Seattle, where users wrote that only a fraction of posts were visible or that the platform was failing to load altogether. A few minutes after the outage, the site appeared to work for users.
Downdetector data showed a sudden spike in problem reports well above normal levels signaling a broad disruption, though X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, had not issued an official explanation for the apparent outage.
The apparent X outage comes just days after Verizon was hit by a massive nationwide network failure that left phones stuck in SOS mode, disrupted 911 calls in some areas and later sparked outrage over the carrier’s $20 customer credit.
