One day after hurting his left shoulder, Anthony Volpe was held out of the Yankees‘ lineup for their Sunday series finale against the Rays.
The shortstop said he felt a “pop” in his shoulder after diving for a grounder in the hole during the eighth inning of Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. Volpe was clearly in pain after landing hard on his shoulder, but he remained in the game and made a costly error a few batters later.

After the game, Volpe said that an X-ray on his shoulder came back clean. On Sunday, Aaron Boone added that an MRI also provided “good news.” The manager called Volpe “day-to-day” and said that he planned to do some hitting on Sunday.
“I feel like we’re probably in a good spot,” Boone said. “Strength and everything’s real good, though. So I would say overall encouraging news.”
The manager went on to say, “Hopefully we’re good, but we certainly want to see how today unfolds and how the next couple days are.”
Asked about the “pop” in Volpe’s shoulder and whether there was a specific diagnosis, Boone said the Yankees didn’t have one.
“It’s a little unclear in there,” Boone said. “He’s got some stuff that they feel like is older stuff, so it’s hard to know exactly. But he’s definitely cranky in the shoulder today.”
Volpe has been a constant presence on the field since becoming the Yankees’ shortstop at the start of the 2023 season. He played in 159 games that year and 160 last year. Prior to Sunday’s game, Volpe had played in all of the Yankees’ 2025 contests.
A Gold Glove winner in 2023 and a finalist in 2024, Volpe is hitting .233/.326/.442 with five home runs and 19 RBI this season.
With Volpe out of the lineup, Oswald Peraza received his first start of the season at shortstop. Peraza was slashing .206/.250/.353 with one homer and five RBI entering Sunday’s game.
