The story of last offseason was how the Yankees would pivot from losing Juan Soto. Entering this winter, the Yankees’ braintrust is interested in bringing back the central piece of their ‘Plan B.’
Cody Bellinger had a strong 2025 for the Bombers, setting up a nice payday for the veteran. The 29-year-old opted out of his contract to become a free agent and the Yankees are expected to be among the suitors.
“He was an impact player for us,” GM Brian Cashman said on Thursday at Yankee Stadium. “I’m glad we got him, and we certainly expect him to opt out.
“We haven’t gotten to those conversations yet. … He was really impactful for us. He was one of the many reasons why we were in a position to believe that we were capable of great things this year. I thank him for everything he’s done.”
Bellinger slashed .272/.334/.480 with 29 homers, 98 RBI and 12 stolen bases but didn’t exactly light the world on fire in October, going 6-for-28.
The versatile Bellinger played all three outfield positions as well as logging some innings at first base. While Cashman expressed interest in bringing him back to the Bronx, he stated that those conversations with his agent have yet to begin.
“Certainly would love to have him with our team moving forward, but we haven’t had any of those discussions,” said Cashman. “I haven’t had any conversations with Scott Boras. Bouquets his way, without a doubt. He helped us on both sides of the ball, he’s a versatile player, and he was great in our clubhouse.”
Bellinger joins Kyle Tucker at the top of the market as he is expected to net the second-richest contract amongst outfielders this offseason.
Bellinger’s 2025 teammate Trent Grisham is also expected to hit the market — although the Yankees have a decision to make regarding the qualifying offer. However, it remains difficult to see a world where both return with the Yanks, with team brass stating Jasson Dominguez and prospect Spencer Jones are deserving chances next season.
Manager Aaron Boone stated Dominguez is expected to play “regularly,” and Cashman added that Jones has earned his opportunity to become an everyday MLB player.
