Yankees’ depth takes another hit with Amed Rosario injured

The Yankees‘ depth took another hit on Sunday morning, as the team placed Amed Rosario on the 10-day injured list.

Rosario, acquired from the Nationals prior to the trade deadline, is dealing with a left sternoclavicular joint sprain after crashing into the right field wall at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. Rosario was attempting to make a catch in the 10th inning of the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Astros.

“I was just trying to make a play,” Rosario said. “I started running real fast, trying to catch that ball. The distance there, I didn’t calculate correctly, and then I hit the wall.”

Despite the IL designation, which is retroactive to Aug. 9, Rosario considers himself “day-to-day.” He hopes to return after the minimum 10 days on the IL. Aaron Boone is also optimistic that that timetable is feasible.

A utilityman but a limited defender, Rosario is 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI over four games with the Yankees so far. He is hitting .277 with a .747 OPS, five homers and 19 RBI overall this season.

With Rosario on the shelf, three of the Yankees’ trade deadline acquisitions are presently off the active roster. Reliever Jake Bird was optioned to Triple-A shortly after joining the Yankees, while Austin Slater is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a hamstring strain.

Rosario and Slater, both right-handed hitters, were added because the Yankees needed options against left-handed pitching. The two also provided outfield depth for a club that does not have any Triple-A outfielders on the 40-man roster right now.

With catcher JC Escarra — a lefty-swinger — taking Rosario’s place on the active roster, the only other position players on the Yankees’ 40-man squad are infielders Jorbit Vivas and Braden Shewmake.

STANTON SITS SUNDAY

With the Yankees trying to take a series from the Astros and hang onto the American League’s third Wild Card spot, Boone said he “flirted” with starting the red-hot Giancarlo Stanton in right field for a second straight game on Sunday. Ultimately, however, he decided against it.

Saturday marked Stanton’s first defensive effort since 2023, as lower-body injuries have limited him to DH duties. However, with Aaron Judge presently restricted to DH’ing as he recovers from a right flexor strain, Stanton has worked to make himself an option in the outfield again.

“I kind of want to be smart about it,” Boone said of how often he’ll use Stanton in the outfield.

THE LATEST ON JUDGE

Boone added that Judge’s throwing program is “moving in a pretty good direction.” The manager said Judge is “optimistic” that he will return to the outfield “sooner rather than later,” but Boone didn’t want to share a target date just yet.
