The Yankees promoted a handful of prospects on Tuesday, most notably sending Cam Schlittler to Triple-A and Carlos Lagrange to Double-A.
Schlittler is considered the Yankees’ 10th-best prospect by MLB.com. A first-time invitee to big league camp this spring, the righty went on to record a 2.38 ERA, 17 walks and 64 strikeouts over 10 games (9 starts) and 53 innings at Double-A Somerset.
“He had a really outstanding spring training and made quite the impression with the big league team,” Double-A pitching coach Pete Larson told the Daily News. “I think he’s building on that.
“He killed it. I’m very happy for him and proud of him and the work that he did in these two months.”
Larson added that Schlittler, a seventh-round pick in 2022, learned a lot about keeping a routine from watching Gerrit Cole, Max Fried and Carlos Rodón. Meanwhile, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said in April that Schlittler could potentially help the big league team in the second half this season.
The 24-year-old Schlittler also benefitted from a new cutter. He had been working on a changeup, a splitter and a short slider in spring training. However, those pitches have since been scrapped.
The cutter joined a curveball, sweeper and fastball that can hit the upper-90s. Schlittler only needed a few bullpen sessions to experiment with the cutter before using it in games.
“It’s a nice bridge pitch to help him get to the other weapons,” Larson said. “He gravitated toward it really quickly.”

Now Larson is looking forward to working with Lagrange, the Yankees’ 17th-best prospect.
Another right-hander, Lagrange had a 4.10 ERA over eight starts and 41.2 innings with High-A Hudson Valley, though two clunkers inflated that number. Armed with a fastball that can top 100 mph, the 6-7 fireballer struck out 64 batters with the Renegades while walking 12.
“The way he’s attacking the zone and being very aggressive in the strike zone is the most appealing thing so far,” Larson said of the 22-year-old Dominican. “That’s what got him up so fast and so quick.
“Having the pitches obviously helps, and the velocity helps immensely, but you have to take those weapons and be competitive in the strike zone. He showed that he could do that at a high level.”

Larson said that the organization’s message to Lagrange has been to focus on consistency, particularly with his delivery. Repeatability isn’t always the easiest thing for tall pitchers, but Lagrange seems to be maximizing his lanky frame thus far.
“He has the stuff, and it’s never been a question of that,” Larson said. “It’s just, ‘Can you do it consistently enough to last longer in games and compete as long as you can?’”
Schlittler and Lagrange weren’t the only Yankees prospects to receive promotions on Tuesday.
Roc Riggio, a fourth-round pick in 2023, and Brendan Jones, a 12th-round pick in 2024, went from Hudson Valley to Somerset. Brennen Davis, once a top-100 prospect in the Cubs’ system, moved from Double-A to Triple-A.
