Spencer Jones is graduating.
The outfielder is being promoted to Triple-A, according to SNY’s Andy Martino. Jones is considered the second-best prospect in the Yankees’ system by MLB.com.
The 24-year-old has been on fire lately, hitting .325 with a 1.049 OPS, seven home runs and 16 RBI since returning from an intercostal injury, which cost him about three weeks in May. Jones, who tweaked his swing and stance recently, has been even better over his last 13 games with Somerset, hitting .429 with a 1.346 OPS, six longballs and 13 RBI.
He hit .274/.389/.594 with 16 home runs, 32 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a 185 wRC+ across 49 total games at Double-A.
Primarily a center fielder, Jones was drafted 25th overall by the Yankees in 2022. The Vanderbilt product has faced enormous expectations since, as his 6-7 frame inspired comps to Aaron Judge despite swinging from the left side.
However, Jones spent the entire 2024 season at Double-A, where he set a record for Yankees minor leaguers with 200 strikeouts. His K% remains high this season — he’s gone from 36.8% last year to 33.7% this season — but that number has improved even more since the IL stint with Jones also enjoying better contact quality.
Jones has been striking out at a 30.5% clip since returning from his injury.
Now Jones will try to stay hot at Triple-A after taking some time to develop at Double-A. His promotion comes with the Yankees placing fellow outfielder Everson Pereira, a member of the 40-man roster, on the temporary inactive list.
