A 29-year-old man from Yonkers is dead after shooting himself in a New Jersey gun range.
Police said Monday that the incident occurred late Friday afternoon at the Long Shot Pistol and Rifle in Secaucus.
The unidentified victim visited the range with another person who wasn’t a relative around 4:30 p.m., according to NJ.com. Cops don’t believe the shooter’s death was accidental.
“This was a planned act, in our opinion,” Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller reportedly said.
Long Shot Pistol and Rifle is located about four miles from the Lincoln Tunnel. Facility rules stipulate that shooters must be accompanied by a second party unless that individual is actively involved in the military or law enforcement, or otherwise authorized to use the range alone.
The victim’s name hasn’t been reported. It’s unclear if he used his own firearm. Authorities told the Daily News in an email that the victim was pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Suicide takes the life of one American every 11 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Nearly 50,000 people ended their lives in 2023 nationwide. Anyone considering suicide or knows someone who may be is encouraged to contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
