A delivery driver allegedly sexually assaulted a person at the University of Connecticut in Storrs on Saturday.
Police said a DoorDash delivery driver lured the victim into their car while making a delivery in the Hilltop Apartments parking lot around 5:45 p.m.
The suspect, described as a man around 30 years old, began assaulting the victim as soon as they got into the car.
The victim, who was not identified, was able to exit the car and get to safety while the suspect fled the scene in a 1998 gold Toyota Camry.
The school said police had identified a suspect and the investigation is ongoing.
“This is something that no one should ever have to go through,” DoorDash said in a statement. “We are urgently investigating these disturbing reports, and have removed the suspect’s access to the platform while we obtain more information. Our team is fully cooperating with law enforcement in hopes that whoever is responsible will be brought to justice.”
The company said its delivery drivers must verify their identity and pass a criminal background check.
In a safety report released in fall 2024, university police received eight reports of sexual assault on campus in 2023 — the same number as the prior year.
“I was like ‘How could that happen?’ It’s so crazy because this is such a small community that something like that could happen over here,” sophomore Evan Czaja, sophomore told NBC Connecticut.
