Sailboat goes missing between New Haven, North Carolina

A Coast Guard search is under way for a sailboat that went missing on its way to Ocracoke, N.C., from New Haven, Conn.

The “Hot Chocolate,” as the vessel is known, set sail from New Haven with three people aboard, heading for the Outer Banks enclave, the U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday. The boat was “operating off the continental shelf,” the USCG said, adding that authorities are “seeking any information.”

The Coast Guard did not name those onboard or say whether they were from Connecticut or North Carolina.

The boat embarked Saturday for a 575-mile journey that was supposed to take five days, according to Boat Watch, a group that monitors maritime safety and offers assistance to stranded sailors.

“The sailors reported that the engine failed the first day,” Boat Watch said in a statement on its site, describing the boat as having a red hull and a 25 HP Evinrude engine on the stern.

The three people onboard are in their 30s and include someone known as Captain Jeremy, according to the group.
